Following the success of the Africa-France Summit, Montpellier is proud to host and co-organise the first Euro-Africa Biennial in autumn 2023. A key week to connect the European and African research and innovation ecosystems!

We will participate with Rhizome Cities, our programme that aims to foster greater people-to-people exchange between European and sub-Saharan political and cultural communities, providing structured occasions for Municipalities and Civil Society from across Europe and the African continent to come together.

The event will be the final stage of the Rhizome Cities project and all mayors involved in the project will be there to present and sign the declaration, and explain the next steps of the project.

About the programme

The Euro-Africa Biennial will have two sections:

  • A cultural programme for the general public: the programme will include events with a national and international profile, to showcase existing and future cooperation between Montpellier and the African continent (a festival for the general public, evening screenings, concerts, dances in the city’s emblematic venues and open-air spaces, artists’ residencies, focus events in the city’s artistic, cultural and knowledge centres), and also to transform the public’s perception of the reality of current African cultures, particularly in the field of the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI). A concentration of Africa’s CCI fabric will be on show at Halle Tropisme and other venues in the city, following on from the Africa Past Forward Forum to be held at the Gaîté Lyrique in Paris on 6 and 7 October 2023.

  • Development and innovation: this will include a multi-stakeholder conference on the challenges of managing water resources and cooperation between local authorities, scientists and civil society to meet these challenges. The “Euro-Africa Montpellier Waters Days” will take the form of a multi-stakeholder conference on the challenges of managing water resources and cooperation between local and regional authorities, scientists and civil society.

The programme will be out soon on this webpage.
