4 SHORT DOCUMENTARIES FROM PALERMO AND A NEW EDITION OF ISTANBUL VIDEOS PREMIERE

On Wednesday 22 November between 19.00-21.00 at La Bandita/Zabbara HQ ın Vıcolo Ragusi 31 , the screening will be followed by a conversation with the producers from Palermo who share their stories in the series. “Back to the land” is a tendency towards the rebuilding of urban people’s broken ties to the land. It also brings with it a criticism of today’s urbanity and urbanization practices.

Producers in the videos from both cities have in common in terms of demonstrating that fair, healthy and clean food can be produced in urban peripheries. However, the problems they face are different as the cities have different urbanization practices and demographic changes. In Palermo, the abandonment of agricultural lands and recent fires are the main threats to the existence and sustainability of this type of production, while in Istanbul the main problem threatening this type of production is the construction pressure on the urban periphery.

In such a period when we are talking about multiple crises and disasters, it becomes even more important to talk about fair, healthy and clean food production and the protection of areas suitable for this. The video series offers us the opportunity to question today’s demographic changes, urbanization dynamics, and climate crisis while discussing the problems of local producers. The producers that will take part in the event are Luigi Rotondo, Alba Ingrassia, Rossella Calascibetta, and Alessandro Marfia. Following the conversation and Q&A, a small buffet with the products supplied by the producers will be offered. Local natural wine will be also available.

“Back to the Land Initiatives in the Periphery of Istanbul” Video Series

Seven producers with various professional backgrounds who “return to the land” from urban centres are in the video series “Back to the Land Initiatives in the Periphery of Istanbul” with seven different stories. The series aims to reveal the activities of producers in Beykoz, Silivri, Kartal, Şile and Sarıyer with a focus on fair, healthy and clean food production in the periphery. In the narratives of the producers, concerns about water, soil and seeds, which are the basic components of such a production, come to the fore, while the biggest threat is seen to be the zoning pressure created by the city on the periphery.

Collaborations with producers’ markets, food communities and cooperatives point to the city’s resilience to these threats and allow it to be imagined as an ethical and ecological community.

They can be seen on Center for Spatial Justice* YouTube channel.
