CAMPOBELLO Premiere: A Story of Europe on the Margins

By Eva-Maria Bertschy, with Abou Bakar Sidibé and Daniela Macaluso.

The first stage performance of the Campobello project. Campobello is a theatrical tale that interweaves reality and fiction to give voice to a Europe on the margins: a Europe sustained by the invisible labor of migrant laborers and the fragility of those living on the continent’s social peripheries. Set in a small town in western Sicily, the show follows the encounter between Simona and Amadou, two parallel lives united by a love that becomes a political gesture and a form of resistance.

The results of over two years of research in olive-harvesting areas, the work combines real-life testimonies, live music, and a stage language that blends Italian, French, and Bambara.

Director Eva-Maria Bertschy, together with Abou Bakar Sidibé and Daniela Macaluso, constructs a contemporary parable on institutional indifference, new forms of exploitation, and the solidarity that continues to emerge on the margins.

With an ever-changing scenography and original music that intertwines African traditions and European melodies, Campobello becomes a portrait of a contradictory Europe: a place of inequality, but also of community, resistance, and possibility.
